In recent years, indigo has provided stimulus due to its intensity of natural hues and distinctive shades of blue colouring. Compared to other colours in the forests of greens and yellows, it is unlike any other pigments and surrounded in deep history with a vast legacy that has over the years affecting cultural, social, political factors, becoming forms of identity (uniforms, counterculture, and youth) and symbols of status to mainstream fashion around the world. It can be traced within most cultures and grows all over the world.

The interactions of migration, heritage, culture and climate are at the heart of this research, which will be expressed and translated through core themes of identity, sustainability, ethics, material culture, technology and textile design.

Natural indigo plants are currently having a modest commercial revival being used by traditional practitioners, dyers and crafts people. The use of natural indigo in this vat of multi coloured dyed world today, is continuing to affect aspects of our community. Our challenge is to explore Indigo from our perspective located in Singapore, explore the possibilities of Indigo’s ‘universal’ qualities from our lens.
